Home non-invasive pulmonary ventilation (NIPV)

Home non-invasive pulmonary ventilation works in the same way as pulmonary ventilation in a healthcare facility, i.e. it partially or completely mechanically replaces spontaneous breathing activity. The ventilators used do not require continuous supervision by health professionals, so it is possible to discharge a client to home care after careful training of family members.

There are several conditions that must be met to be eligible for the NIPV program. These include:

• An assessment of whether the client's medical condition allows for home care, as well as the ability and readiness of loved ones to provide care for a full 24 hours.
• An assessment of the family's social and economic circumstances.
• The readiness of the home environment for the new situation (wheelchair access, adequate sanitary facilities, suitable bed, etc.)

A patient is enrolled in the NIPV programme on the basis of an indication by the attending physician in the hospital facility, the application is then assessed and approved by the reviewing physician of the relevant health insurance company.
